Residents from Banksia Lodge, our residential aged care facility, recently spent a fabulous day at Mogo Zoo, courtesy of the combined generosity of the Zoo’s management and Banksia Men’s Shed members.
The day came about as a consequence of the Men’s Shed’s involvement with the Zoo’s breeding program. In 2016, the Zoo approached members to see if they could make a number of handcrafted breeding boxes for their sugar gliders and micro bats. 
The “Shedders” were only too keen to lend a hand and, using timber and other materials provided by the Zoo, crafted the boxes over a number of months. The finished boxes are now fully installed at the Zoo, helping to ensure the continuation of these amazing and very special animals.
The Zoo was thrilled with the outcome, and kindly donated ten free passes to the Men’s Shed in appreciation for their assistance. In keeping with the incredible generosity of our Men’s Shed members, they suggested we arrange a special day out last month at the Zoo for Lodge residents, using the free passes.
The privately owned Mogo Zoo is located in the historic gold mining village of Mogo, not far from Banksia Village. Its important work includes providing facilities for over 200 animals, including many rare and exotic species and Australia’s largest collection of primates, and managing a range of regional and global breeding programs.
Our residents had a fantastic day, with some amazing encounters with the animals, a special viewing of the breeding boxes in situ, and a great lunch out.
