Volunteers Week is the annual celebration designed to acknowledge the bighearted contributions of our nation’s volunteers. It takes place across Australia from 20-26 May 2019.
According to Volunteering Australia there are around 6 million volunteers in Australia – giving their time to help others in areas as diverse as schools, hospitals, zoos, museums and of course aged care.
At Banksia we are fortunate to have more than 30 volunteers who donate their time and skills so generously for the benefit of residents.
Banksia Volunteers assist residents in a huge variety of ways including:
- Driving the bus
- Providing manicures
- Hosting ‘’chat’’ sessions with residents
- Calling bingo numbers
- Organising raffles
- and so much more.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life and bring so many skills and life experiences with them. Some are family members of residents, some are residents themselves who serve on a committee or go out of their way to help others, some are staff members, some are Company Members and some are simply members of the local community. Even our Board of Directors are volunteers, giving their time and extensive professional experience to this important governance role.
Each and every one of them is truly appreciated and everyone here at Banksia is so grateful for their generous contribution. As one of our much loved former Registered Nurses, Bernie, once said, “where would be without our volunteers?”
On May 22nd we will be holding a special morning tea at Banksia Lodge as a way of saying Thank You to all our volunteers for the amazing work they do. If you have been thinking about volunteering, whether you’re available once a year or once a week, Banksia would love to hear from you. Call Ute Totterdell on 4471 6091 for more information.
