Researchers from the University of Canberra joined with residents of Banksia Lodge and students of Carroll College last year, to conduct an innovative research project.

The “Take a Cycle With Me” program focused on providing an opportunity for Carroll College’s teenage students and Banksia Lodge aged care residents to co-create a personalised virtual walking or cycling tour. The research had a number of aims, one of which was to review any changes in the residents’ quality of life and loneliness after the program.

Banksia Villages CEO Graham Wise was thrilled that Banksia residents had the opportunity to take part in the intergenerational project, citing Banksia’s commitment to research, learning and resident outcomes.

The project was a success, with all 18 residents and 24 students who participated reporting a positive experience of the program.   The final research report can be found here and provides an excellent insight into how the residents and students worked together, finding common ground and opening lines of communication.
